Sign the Petition for Louisiana Medicaid Expansion

The Louisiana Budget Project joined a growing list of 286 organizations and individuals in urging Governor Jindal to accept billions of dollars in new federal support for Medicaid that can be used to expand health coverage to as many as 400,000 Louisianans beginning in 2014. Join us in our effort.

Medicaid expansion will improve the health and well-being of our state’s families and provide local businesses with healthier and more productive workers. The influx of new federal revenue will help ensure that doctors and hospitals get paid for the important services they provide and give a boost to the state economy that will help create jobs in ever parish.

All of these benefits will come at little cost to Louisiana’s budget. The federal government will pay 100% of the cost for the first three years, with the state slowly chipping in after that, but never having to pay more than 10% of the cost. And, Medicaid expansion will help generate health care savings that can be used to cover this modest state cost.

The governor's plan will mainly benefit corporations and the wealthy, while working and middle-class families will pay more for services and products we use every day such as diapers, garbage collection, haircuts and home repairs. Louisiana’s tax system certainly needs to be improved, but this is the wrong way to do it.
Gov. Jeff Landry has called the Legislature into a special session to overhaul Louisiana’s tax structure.
