The Louisiana Budget Project (LBP) seeks to hire a full-time Outreach Coordinator.
LBP, a project of the Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations, provides independent, nonpartisan research, analysis, and advocacy on budget, tax, and other fiscal issues in Louisiana with an emphasis on how these issues affect low- and moderate-income Louisianans.
General Description
The Outreach Coordinator’s work role is to increase LBP’s advocacy capacity throughout Louisiana and in the state legislature; develop leadership for state and local coalitions, including LBP’s revenue coalition, Better Choices for a Better Louisiana (BCBL); and conduct statewide community outreach and coalition building efforts on state and federal tax and budget issues.
The Outreach Coordinator will have four key areas of responsibility:
• Building membership and leadership in state and regional budget and other fiscal policy coalitions;
• Working with coalition partners to plan and implement earned media events;
• Building BCBL membership and lobbying strength; and
• Building allies, organizational contacts, and legislative support for LBP.
The position is funded through a two-year grant that ends June 30, 2013. The position may continue if funding becomes available.
Responsibilities
• Provide support for BCBL coalition dedicated to a balanced approach to solving the state’s fiscal problems.
• Coordinate short-term and long-term planning of coalition activities.
• Facilitate ongoing dialogue among coalition participants through committee meetings, general coalition meetings, and phone and email communications.
• Schedule visits between constituents and legislators.
• Prepare outreach materials.
• Educate coalition participants and potential allies through
presentations and web-based and other materials that convey key information about the state’s budget situation, the importance of raising revenues, and the coalition’s action agenda.
• Conduct outreach to recruit new coalition members.
• Maintain lists for information dissemination and convening BCBL, as well as preparing members and sending calls for action.
• Assist with legislative research and monitoring bills and committees during legislative sessions.
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
• Demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice for low- and moderate-income people and the mission of LBP
• Bachelor’s degree, preferably in public policy or a related field
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to convey technical information clearly to a range of audiences and the willingness to take part in a collegial writing and editing process
• 3 to 5 years’ experience in issue-based organizing or political campaigns
• Experience with the state legislative process
• Strong skills in PC-based Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and web page design
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and to complete assigned projects under time constraints, all in a fast-paced environment
• Ability and willingness to travel frequently within the state, including a current driver’s license
Compensation
Salary based on experience and includes health and dental insurance, vacation, and pension plan.
